Next St Nick's Dads Meeting

Our next meeting is meeting is tomorrow (Wednesday 13th April) in the Robin Hood at 9pm. Hopefully you will be able to join me. Since it is still Lent I shall be partaking of a lightly carbonated fruit based non alchoholic alternative to beer. Alas!

Getting Ready for Easter

The Churchyard needs some work as does the Church for Easter. There is Church cleaning from 9:30 to 11:30 on Saturday. I am going to be in and around in the Churchyard doing some tidying up on Saturday morning, so please do come along.

Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday is next Sunday on the 17th April and marks the start of Holy Week. The service is aimed at both children and adults and I need everyone to come along and be prepared to carry palm fronds and branches. I will be preaching so please come along be ready to cheer (or boo) in the right places.

Churchyard Tidyup

There needs to be some Saturday Morning sessions to tidy up the churchyard and prepare the ground for the next stage of the 2011 wildlife friendly scheme:

The dates that work needs to be done on are all Saturdays between 10:00 to 12:00 on

In addition to the regular clean up and cutting back the other activity is to remove the grass at the Rectory end of the churchyard in preparation for the sowing of wildflower seed. Eamonn is the one who is driving the Churchyard project so any questions then please email him. Everybody is welcome to dig and cut, so please do try and bully children and trick wives/partners into coming.

Walking

Is anyone interested in doing a walk on a Saturday or a Sunday after Church? Let me know as I want to start that going.

Step 1 to Making the Churchyard Wildlife Friendly

There's a working party planned for Saturday 6th March when the Dads Group will join other members of the St Nicholas family in the first stage in making the churchyard a more wildlife friendly place. The Dads are needed to prepare a trial area of approximately 2 m²in the churchyard ( just over 21 square feet in real numbers) . Of course we'll be digging in a churchyard that has had a German bomb dropped on it and it has had plenty of animals digging around it over the years so there is just the possibility that bone fragments may turn up.

The tasks that need to be completed on the day are:

Select site and carefully remove turf (dept of approximately 5cm.
Place the turf on one side
Dig down to a depth of approximately 5-10cm into the subsoil and place it on a tarpaulin to one side,
Lay the turf back upside down into the bottom of the hole.
Replace and covering it over with the subsoil which was dug out. Wildflower seedlings could then be placed into the soil.

There will be other working dates later in March and April when we'll need to plant plug plants into the trial area.

We'll make a further announcement about the times of the working day shortly.

Mothers' Union

Buy Christian Christmas stamps

The Royal Mail has traditionally alternated between sacred and secular designs for their Christmas stamps and this year it is the turn for a religious image. Royal Mail has issued two sets of designs this year. The main set of designs, available in all the main denominations is of angels, which is vaguely Christian but not explicitly so and certainly not specifically Christmassy. They have also issued a 'Madonna and Child' design for first and second class only. Post Office staff have been instructed to only sell this design if people specifically request it, but obviously people can't request it if they don't know it exists! If people don't buy these stamps, Royal Mail will claim there is no demand for religious Christmas stamps and not produce them in future. Please therefore ask for 'Madonna and Child' stamps when you do your Christmas posting and also ask your friends, contacts etc. to do the same.

Sutton Saphires

Last Thursday, 29th November saw a group of 7 young people and some of their dads head off to Chatham to compete in a heat of the First Lego League.

The FFL championship is an international robotics and teamwork challenge held in a sports like atmosphere of competition.

The group was organised by members of the St Nicholas Dads Group and the team members consisted of young people from the church and their friends from school.

Sutton Saphire (aka Sutton Sap'ers) came overall 10th out of a field of 11th. They had a very good second round before being eliminated and put on a creditable performance against school teams that had all competed in the competition before.

The team was sponsored by SAP. Special thanks must go to Eamonn Mullally for bringing the team together, arranging the coaching sessions and the sponsorship.

Website Changes
There have been 2 changes to the website structure this week. Firstly the Editor wishes to apologise for the long standing error of omitting the details of the Thursday Mattins services in the Monthly server times. The notice for May has now been corrected and all future notices of service times will include the weekday service details.

Secondly the news feed from Southwark Diocese has been dropped and replaced with a news feed from the Church of England website. You can find the new links on the left hand side of the page. The Southwark links were dropped because of the lack of regularity of update. The link to the main Southwark diocese website remains.

Making our cemeteries safer:

"Sutton Council is carrying out a health and safety survey of every headstone in the borough's cemeteries and churchyards.

The national Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has asked all local councils to carry out the survey following a number of deaths and injuries in cemeteries caused by falling headstones.

Sutton Council will test all memorials in Sutton Cemetery, Cuddington Cemetery and St Phillip's Churchyard, Bandon Hill Cemetery, All Saints' Churchyard Carshalton, All Saints' Churchyard Benhilton, and St Nicholas' Churchyard."

Singers needed for Trinity Church Anniversary concert

As part of the opening celebrations of Trinity's Centenary year starting in October, a performance of Haydn's 'Nelson' Mass is taking place on Saturday 14th October at 6:30 pm. If you are interested in taking part, rehersals will be on Tuesday evenings from 8:30-9:30 in the Upper Parlour at Trinity, starting on 17th May. Scores will be provided. We are getting a new Assistant Curate for the Team. Jane Cresswell who is currently a Reader at All Saints, Sanderstead is to be ordained as Deacon on 1st July at Southwark Cathedral. Jane has been training on the SEITE course and will take up post following her ordination. This is to be a training post and so is likely to be in the team for 3-4 years. Jane has been a Reader since 1991. She has had a career in the Home Office including time in Public Order, Prison Building and Immigration and Nationality Directorates. Jane and her family will live in the St Barnabas vicarage.

THE REV DAME SARAH MULLALLY, 45, was England’s chief nursing officer until she resigned three years ago to become a Church of England vicar in South London. She took a drop in salary from £110,000 to £21,000, and her family — her husband Eamonn, a human resources manager based in Heidelberg, and two children Grace, 15 and Liam, 11 — moved from their lovingly renovated home in South Lambeth to church accommodation in Battersea. They moved to Sutton last September when she took up her current post as team rector of three churches.

The Parochial Church Council, or PCC, is an executive committee of the parish with powers and duties defined by certain Acts of Parliament. The membership consists of the clergy and churchwardens of the parish, together with a number of representatives of the laity elected by the annual parochial church meeting of the parish. The PCC secretary and the treasurer are elected from the PCC.

Apart from the vicar, who is ex-officio chairman, all PCC members are elected directly or indirectly by the parishioners. An Annual Parochial Church Meeting must be held before April 30th each year. (We are cutting it fine)

Women's World Day of Prayer

There will be a special service to mark Women's World Day of Prayer on Friday 2nd March 2007 at 10:30 St Barnabas Church. The theme is "United Under God's Tent". The service has been arranged by the Christian Women of Paraguay and the speaker will be Carole Adams.

Women's World Day of Prayer is a worldwide movement of Christian women who come together to observe a common day of prayer held on the first Friday in March each year, and who, in many countries, have a continuing relationship in prayer and service. Through Women's World Day of Prayer women are encouraged to become aware of their talents and use them in the service of the wider community.

On the morning of Saturday February 17th members of St Nicholas' Mothers' Union joined others from all over the diocese at a Festival Service at Southwark Cathedral. The Bishop of Southwark, Tom Butler joined in the celebrations. The picture shows the banner from St Nicholas taken to the cathedral.

A Challenge for Lent
The Ecumenical Church Council invite you to mark the beginning of Lent by giving up your usual evening meal on Ash Wednesday and giving the money saved to help feed the hungry.

There will be a frugal supper in Trinity Oasis at 7pm on Wednesday 21st February. Tickets priced £1.50 will be available from representatives at each church. The proceeds will go to Christian Aid.

The supper at Trinity will include devotional readings and music and will finish in time for those who wish to attend the service of worship at St Barnabus at 8:15pm

Moving On

Last Wednesday 17th January the Rev Rosie Deedes, Chaplain at HM's Prison & Young Offenders' Institute, Downview visited the Mothers Union meeting at Janet Little's house. Rosie introduced the 'Moving On' project.

When a person is released from prison after a long sentence, it can be hard for them to find their own way across London. They can sometimes find it very hard to judge traffic speeds or cope wih crowds. Little things like ticket machines replacing people can create bariers for someone trying to make their way back into society.

Roise talked about how volunteers help women from Downview make their first journey from prison back home.

Field of Hope

The daffodils are starting to come up around St Nicholas and the sign that marks this area of the church yard as a Marie Curie Field of Hope has been put up.

The sign will stay up during the bulb's flowering and as the blooms fade it will be taken down until the following spring.
